Before they became rival managers, José Mourinho and Pep Guardiola used to be colleagues at Barcelona. 

Between 1996 and 2000, Mourinho was a member of the club's coaching staff while Pep was a first-team player and they both reportedly had a close relationship.

In 2008, after he had left Chelsea, it was rumoured that Barcelona wanted to appoint Mourinho as manager of the club. But in the end, it was Guardiola who got the job. Mourinho denied the report though, saying he was never close to becoming Barcelona manager.

Their first meeting as managers came in the 2009-10 UCL group stage where Mourinho's Inter and Pep's Barcelona played a 0-0 draw. Barcelona won 2-0 in the reverse fixture. 

Both managers clashed again in the semi-finals of the same competition, with Inter winning 3-2 on aggregate.

Their rivalry reached its peak when Mourinho was appointed Real Madrid manager in 2010 while Pep was still at Barcelona. They faced each other 11 times in that period.

After their "El Classico rivalry," they met again in the 2013 UEFA Super Cup, where Pep's Bayern Munich defeated Mourinho's Chelsea 5-4 on penalties.

Their rivalry was revived when both Pep and Mourinho joined Man City and Man United respectively in the summer of 2016. Both managers faced each other six times in the Manchester Derby before Mourinho later joined Spurs and came up against Pep's Man City thrice.

In total, both managers have faced each other 25 times-12 wins for Pep, 7 wins for Mourinho and 6 draws.

Despite their perceived rivalry, Mourinho revealed that they still communicate, maintain a good relationship and that they reached out to each other when they both lost their parents.
